Low Back Pain

“My back went out.” “My sciatica is acting up again.” Have you ever heard yourself, or someone else, say these words? Low back pain is among the most common reasons to see a physician, with one study finding up to 25% of Americans reporting an incidence of lower back pain within the last 3 months. And the physical pain can come along with a hefty financial pain as well. (Childs et al).

But there is some good news.  Early intervention, which means within 9 days of the onset of pain, and the help of physical therapy, resulted in the quicker resolution of symptoms and 60% lower overall medical costs. Those medical costs include the prescribing and usage of prescription opioids, corticosteroids, and muscle relaxers. (Fritz et al).

More good news — a physical therapist who has completed a Doctor of Physical Therapy program may evaluate and treat a patient for up to 30 consecutive days after an initial evaluation, without a referral!  That’s a good reason to seek help for lower back pain immediately!

Historically, low back pain has been poorly managed across the many medical professional disciplines. Clinical experience by your chosen health professional is key. The faster you rehabilitate, the sooner you can return to enjoying a more fulfilling and productive life.
